March 6, 2013
CHICAGO - Women's swimmer Melanie Waszak and women's diver Whitney Johnson have been named the UICFlames.com Co-Student-Athletes of the Week for the period of Feb. 25 - March 3 as announced by the athletic department on Wednesday morning (March 6). Waszak made history last weekend by becoming the first UIC female athlete to capture the Swimmer of the Meet award at the Horizon League Championships. Johnson took home Diver the Meet laurels by sweeping both the one-and three-meter board titles.
Waszak was the star of the 2013 Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships, picking up three individual first-place medals and contributing to three-winning relays. She recorded school records in each of her three solo races, including a new Horizon League record in the 200 m. butterfly with an NCAA B qualifying time of 1:59.26, besting the old mark by nearly two seconds. Waszak's 500 free result of 4:52.95 was less than one second off the all-time conference record and her 200 free time of 1:49.66 was the third fastest in league championship history. The Lemont, Ill. native piloted the women's team to a fourth-place finish, one-half point below third-place winner Green Bay.
Johnson dominated the women's diving competition, becoming UIC's first female Diver of the Meet since 2000. Her one-meter winning score of 296.95 set a new program and Horizon League Championships record. Her first-place tally of 299.00 on the three-meter board is the second-highest championships total since 2006.
Johnson takes home her second UICFlames.com laurel, while Waszak collects her first weekly accolade.
