The UIC men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams welcome Cleveland State, Green Bay, Milwaukee, Valparaiso, Wright State and Youngstown State for the 2013 Horizon League Championships, held at the Flames Natatorium.  Competition gets underway Wednesday and runs through Saturday.

“We are looking forward to a fantastic meet,” head coach Paul Moniak said.  “The team is well prepared and focused as we enter the Horizon League Championships.  The fact we are hosting the meet adds to the excitement.”

The Flames are expected to face tough competition from the six opposing teams, including the reigning champions of Milwaukee.  Over the past few seasons, UIC has come up just short to powers from Milwaukee, Cleveland State and Green Bay, but is hoping to make a strong showing this year.

The men's team continuously improved throughout the season and tallied a record of 6-4, 3-2 against Horizon League opponents.  Contributions came across from the board, with 10 different student-athletes holding top times for the team.  Among them, Mike Greco (19), Christian Grobe (10), Joel Demuth (eight), Vince Errichiello (six), Kei Ishimaru (six) and Rodolfo Zuniga (six) collected first-place finishes on more than one occasion.

While Cleveland State holds the advantage with 15 Horizon League top performances this season, Greco leads on the 3-meter board with a score of 359.65, as he was named Diver of the Week four times.

The women's team enters competition with a 7-3 record, 4-2 in the Horizon League, showing much improvement from the season prior.  Melanie Waszak, Monica Pinkus, Veronica Gibson, Whitney Johnson, Anne Jacobsen, Emily Gniatczyk and Kelsey Millin lead the Flames with top times, as Waszak owns four events and Pinkus’ time of 2:16.89 in the 200 breast produced a school record this season.

After coming away with several first-place finishes, Gibson (15), Waszak (14), Johnson (14), Pinkus (11) and Gniatczyk (eight) came out on top most often for UIC.

This season, Waszak holds a top performance in the Horizon League with her time of 2:01.02 in the 200 fly.  Also represented for top League performances, Johnson leads all divers with a 1-meter score of 287.85 and a 3-meter score of 306.50.  The pair are the lone representatives from the women's team who have received HL honors this season, with Waszak being named Swimmer of the Week on Jan. 14 and Johnson claiming Diver of the Week on five separate occasions.

During last season's championships, the men and women each took an individual title, with Waszak setting a Horizon League record in the 200 fly with 2:00.87.  The men ended competition finishing third with 701.5 and the women came in fourth with 566.5.
