Ostrowski, Greco and Johnson Garner Horizon League Honors

CHICAGO – UIC sophomore Sebastian Ostrowski, senior Mike Greco and sophomore Whitney Johnson were named Horizon League Swimmer of the Week and Divers of the Week, respectively, for Jan. 21-27, the League office announced on Tuesday.  This is the first HL accolade of Ostrowski’s career, the seventh of Greco’s and sixth of Johnson’s, while also marking Greco’s fourth and Johnson’s fifth this season.

A native of Darien, Ill., Ostrowski produced best times in three events, as the Flames defeated Valparaiso, 119-86, on Saturday, Jan. 26.  He came away with first in the 100 back with a time of 51.79 and was a member of the first-place 200 medley relay team, finishing in 1:36.34, while also taking the top time in the 200 free relay with 1:27.72.

Greco, a Naperville, Ill., native, captured first place on the 1-mtr and 3-mtr boards on Saturday, Jan. 26, while competing at the UIC Diving Invitational.  Tallying NCAA qualifying scores, his 326.00 on the 1-mtr was good for a career high and his 359.65 set a season best.

Greco’s other honors of the year came for the weeks of Nov. 5-11, Oct. 29-Nov. 4 and Oct. 22-28.  So far this season, he has finished in first 17 times, while coming away with 10 NCAA qualifying scores.

A native of Roscoe, Ill., Johnson placed first and second against Youngstown State on Friday, Jan. 25 and set career highs at the UIC Diving Invitational.  She came in first with a score of 269.48 on the 1-mtr and second on the 3-mtr with 233.18 against the Penguins.  In a field of 21 divers, Johnson took second in the 1-mtr with a career-high 287.85 and second in the 3-mtr with another career-high 306.50, both of which are NCAA qualifying scores.

Johnson was also named Diver of the Week for Jan. 7-13, Nov. 12-18, Oct. 29-Nov. 4 and Oct. 8-14.  She has 12 first-place finishes this season and six NCAA qualifying scores.

UIC returns to the Flames Natatorium on Saturday for its final regular-season meet against Cleveland State at 1 p.m. (CT).  The Flames will also honor their two seniors, Greco and Emily Gniatczyk.
