CHICAGO – UIC junior Melanie Waszak and sophomore Whitney Johnson were named Horizon League Swimmer of the Week and Diver of the Week, respectively, for Jan. 7-13, the League office announced on Tuesday. This marks the first HL honor of Waszak’s career and the fifth of Johnson’s, her fourth this season.
A Lemont, Ill., native, Waszak took home a pair of individual first-place finishes, as well as a top relay time, on Jan. 12, when the Flames defeated Green Bay, 123-120, at the Flames Natatorium. Waszak bested her opponents in the 200 free with a time of 1:55.39 and the 200 fly with 2:08.37, after swimming the 400 medley relay in 3:53.47 alongside Anne Jacobsen, Monica Pinkus and Emily Gniatczyk.
Johnson, a native of Roscoe, Ill., came out on top of both diving events against the Phoenix. In the one-meter dive, Johnson was able to produce an NCAA qualifying score of 273.91 and recorded a 265.50 on the three-meter board.
Aside from being named Diver of the Week once last season, Johnson’s other accolades came during the fall for the weeks of Oct. 8-14, Oct. 29-Nov. 4 and Nov. 12-18.
The Flames return to competition on Friday, Jan. 25, when the women’s team takes on Youngstown State at 5 p.m. (CT) at the Flames Natatorium.
