Oxford, Ohio - The UIC swimming and diving team traveled down to southern Ohio for the Miami Invitational over the weekend, and the whole team proved to be up for the strong competition from the field composed of league rivals and top competition from across the country.

The women's squad placed 11th in a 16-team field with 288 points. The Flames finished ahead of foes Milwaukee (185) and Cleveland State (160). Host Miami won the invitational with 2103 points to Truman State's runner-up finish of 1443.5.

The first day of competition was minimal in events, but filled with competition. The 800 freestyle relay, composed of Andrea Giczewski, Kathryn McLeland, Shaina Israel and Kelly Hashoian kicked things off with a seventh-place finish in a time of 7:55.03.

Hashoian and Israel came back to compete in the 1650 free finals, with school-record holder Hashoian finishing tenth in the event in 17:29.34.

Day two began with a 14th place finish in the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:40.03, the top time in the Horizon League so far this season.

Freshman Brooke Sawyer placed 16th in the 200 butterfly in 2:10.65 and placed tenth overall in the 100 backstroke, winning the B heat in a season-best time of 59.11.

Captain Andrea Giczewski placed fourth in the finals of the 50 freestyle in a season best 24.00 seconds. Giczewski had been undefeated in the event over the previous five competitions.

The final day of competition began with a disqualification in the 200 medley relay final for the Flames, but Kelly Hashoian remained focused with second-place finish in the B head of the 500 freestyle. Hashoian swam off her school record of 5:05.90, finishing 11th overall in 5:06.33.

 

 

Other top results of the day included Brooke Sawyer's 14th place finish in the 100 butterfly (58.54)and Andrea Giczewski taking sixth-place in the 100 freestyle (52.08).

Sonia Peterson continues to lead the women on the boards this season, placing 20th in the three-meter competition with a score of 190.90.

The Flames wrapped up the day with a 16th-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay with a 3:38.90 from the team made up from Giczewski, junior Ashley Simos, Hashoian and Sawyer.

The swimming and diving teams will host Western Illinois in their final meet of 2007 on Wednesday, December 19th at the UIC Natatorium, starting at 2:00 p.m.
