Men's and Women's Swimming Teams Earn Exhibition Victories over NAIA's Illinois Tech
Nov. 18, 2000 It may have only been an exhibition, but the University of Illinois at Chicago men's and women's swimming team exhibited some serious clout against NAIA opponent Illinois Tech. The men's team downed Illinois Tech 119-89 while the women's team breezed past the Scarlet Hawks 116-64 at the UIC Natatorium on Saturday. The Flames' lead was so great at one point that Interim Coach Ina Harizanova decided to race swimmers as an exhibition in certain events and even place certain swimmers in races that were not familiar to them. UIC won 24 out of the 26 events head to head. Eight of those victories were as exhibitions. "We achieved what we were looking for," Harizanova said. "It was kind of a take-it-easy meet. We had them swim events that are unusual for them. Everyone did excellent." Double winners for the UIC men's team include David Kimmerly (1000 freestyle, 10:58.43, 100 backstroke, 55.89) and Charles Rock (1-meter diving, 316.05, 3-meter diving 296.33). The Flames also received victories from Tom Schwingen (50 freestyle, 21:89), Diego Lora Coronado (200 IM, 1:59.61) and Enric Claret (500 freestyle, 4:52.91). Senior Julie-Anne Chico was the lone double-winner for the Flames as she captured the 200 individual medley (2:18.04) and the 100 backstroke (1:03.18). Other winners for UIC include Stephanie Donovan (1000 freestyle, 11:13.89), Stephanie Brane (200 freestyle, 2:02.88), Adrienne Turri (50 freestyle, 25.59), Andrea Bove (1-meter Diving, 277.13) and Stephanie Murphy (100 butterfly, 1:02.55).
