Men's And Women's Swimming And Diving Teams Drop Two To Northern Iowa And UW-Milwaukee

Cedar Falls, IA-The UIC swimming and diving squads traveled to Northern Iowa on Saturday and came home winless in competition versus the host Panthers and Horizon League rival UW-Milwaukee Panthers. The men were defeated by UNI 171-79 and were beat by UW-Milwaukee 166-86. The women's squad was bested by Northern Iowa 161-77, while UW-Milwaukee defeated the Flames 141-101. Both squads, however, were able to string together some solid individual performances. For the men, sophomore Enric Claret and senior Paul Torres led the way. Claret picked up a win in the 200-yard butterfly (1:57.86) and placed third in the 100-yard freestyle (49.65). Torres won the 400-individual medley in 4:11.03, while finishing fourth in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:50.3. Claret and Torres also teamed up with Dave Kimmerly and Alex Marinof to take second in the 400-yard medley relay. Kimmerly and freshman Chris Kaczor also took home second-place honors on the day, with Kimmerly in the 200-yard backstroke and Kaczor in the 100-yard breaststroke. Mike Magee and Joe Scharnak did well in the diving events, finishing two-three in both the one-meter and three-meter events. For the women, Jamie Redway's school record in the 1000-yard freestyle highlighted the afternoon. The sophomore from Kansas swam to a sizzling 10:39.25 finish, breaking her own school mark of 10:40.71 set last season. She also won the 500-yard freestyle handily in 5:16.79 and took fourth in the 400-yard individual medley (4:56.18).
Christine Hare also helped out the UIC cause with a second-place effort in the 200-yard freestyle and a fourth-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle.
In the diving portion of the meet, Shannon Joseph was second in the three-meter (240.15) and fourth in the one-meter (216.45), while Andrea Bove was fourth in the three-meter (227.70) and third in the one-meter (223.37). Caitlyn Carey finished in second-place in the three-meter with a point-total of 237.67. Both squads will be in action at home this weekend, with the men hosting Western Illinois and the women welcoming in Northern Michigan. Action begins on Friday night in the Flames Natatorium at 5 p.m. |
