Dayton, Ohio - The UIC swimming and diving team kicked off the 2008-09 season against Horizon League powerhouse Wright State on Saturday, with all signs pointing towards a very strong season.

With a bevy of impressive wins and results for the Flames, both teams fell short to the Raiders, as Wright State defeated the men's squad 135-102, as well as the women's team 120.5-116.5.

Kelly Hashoian picked up right where she left off last season, claiming victory in the 1000 (10:38.84) and 500 (5:10.26) freestyle events.

Newcomer Zach Van Swol won the longest freestyle events of the day as well, outdistancing his competitors in the 500 free by eight seconds with a winning time of 4:43.34. In the 1000 free, Van Swol led the Flames in a 1-2 finish in 9:44.91, with Luke Martinez touching the wall at 9:54.36.

Other winners for the Flames included Evan Dunn (1:55.30) and Brooke Sawyer (2:13.02) in the 200 IM, Sonia Peterson in the one-meter (216.67) and three-meter (222.90) diving events, Ashley Simos in the 50 free (25.73), Andy Peterson in the 200 back (1:58.56) and Alexandra Farrar (2:10.22) and Martinez in the 200 fly (1:56.44).

Numerous competitors came within only a few seconds of their season-best times from the 2007-08 campaign in this first meet. In addition, Van Swol's 1000 free showing has already surpassed the top time from last season, a ninth-place 9:45.62 effort by Konrad Korth at the league championships set last February.

The Flames return to the water on Saturday, Nov. 1 at the UIC Natatorium for the season opener against Eastern Illinois, starting at 2 p.m.
