DeKalb, Illinois - Freshman diver Caitlin Carey made quite an impact in her first collegiate meet on Saturday as she broke the school record in the 1-meter diving event against Northern Illinois with a six-dive score of 267.83.

Joanne Moch set the old record in 1993 with a score of 265.20. Carey also took home the 3-meter title with a score of 272.40.

Despite Carey's performance, the women's team dropped the season-opener to Northern Illinois by the score of 131-107.

The Flames (0-1) also received victories from senior Julie-Anne Chico in the 100-yard freestyle (56.45) and the 400-yard freestyle relay team (3:43.86).

On the men's side, UIC fell victim to Northern Illinois by the score of 146-77. Sophomore Enric Claret and senior Paul Torres each turned in winning efforts for the Flames on Saturday.

Claret captured the 200-yard butterfly event with a time of 1:56.31, while Torres won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:05.80).

UIC will be back in action next Saturday, as they will travel to Charleston, Illinois to take on Eastern Illinois at 11:00 a.m.
