ROCHESTER, Mich. –The UIC men’s and women’s swimming and diving program headed to Rochester, Mich. for their first away meet of the season. The women’s team fell short by a final of 178-108, while the men were beaten by the Golden Grizzlies, 179-119.
"Today we faced a tough opponent on the road and, for the most part, competed well," Coach Paul Moniak stated. "Junior diver Connor Howard had a fantastic afternoon, winning both one-and three-meter dives. Senior Monica Pinkus continued her early success with wins in 100 and 200-yard breaststroke, and was part of the winning 200 medley relay."
The women’s side took home first in four of 16 events. The quartet of Anne Jacobsen, Pinkus, Melanie Waszak, and Katherine Hare flew through the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:48.22. Pinkus, Hare, and Waszak were joined by Kelsey Millin to take home first in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:36.68.
Pinkus also dominated in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.97, winning by nearly two seconds. She then went on to take home the 200 breast with a time of 2:21.21.
On the men’s side, sophomore Christian Grobe was victorious in the 100 breast with a time of 58.98. Sophomore Ryoto Kuwahara sped through the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:53.28 to be the top finisher in the event.
Connor Howard came out on top in both diving events this weekend with a score of 275.17 on the one-meter board and 256.80 in the three-meter competition. Tyler Pastore took second in both diving events with scores of 249.00 (one-meter) and 244.80 (three-meter).
The foursome of Nick Kowaleski, Sebastian Ostrowski, and brothers, Peter and Vince Errichello proved to be the best in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:09.51.
Both swimming squads continue action Saturday, Oct. 26 in Charleston, Ill. to take on Eastern Illinois and IUPUI. The meet has a scheduled start time of 1:00 p.m. CT.
