Swimming Puts On Stately Performance At Illinois State Championships

Chicago, Ill. - A select group of swimmers from both the men's and women's swimming teams competed in the 2001 Illinois State Swimming Championships at the UIC Natatorium this past weekend. Freshman Jamie Redway (Kansas City, Kan./F.L. Schlagle), set a school-record, second-place finsh in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:37.59. She added a eighth-place mark of 5:23.01 in the 500-yard freestyle. Freshman Stephanie Murphy (Winter Haven, Fla./Lake Region) recorded a career-best time of 1:00.21 in the 100-yard butterfly. Junior Paul Torres (Morton Grove, Ill./Niles West) turned in a UIC pool record and first-place time of 2:02.12 in the 200-yard breaststroke. He later raced to a runner-up finish of 1:53.12 in the 200-meter individual medley. Other individuals on the men's side that competed in the championships include junior David Kimmerly (Lockport, Ill./Lockport), sophomore Tom Schwingen (Bensenville, Ill./Fenton) and freshman Enric Claret (Escaldes-Engordany,Andorra/Lycee Comte de Foix).
Kimmerly turned in a season-best, fourth-place performance in the 200-yard backstroke (1:55.19) and seventh in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:00.42. Schwingen turned in a season-best, second-place finish of 21.44 in the 50-yard freestyle and also competed in the 100-yard freestyle (3rd, 46.93) and 100-yard backstroke (8th, 56.09). Claret earned a pair of fifth-place finishes in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:45.96) and 200-yard individual medley (1:57.85).
