Final Stats

Chicago, Ill. - Throughout day three of the Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships, one could sense that the conclusion of the meet was near, while the tension level was at a premium at the UIC Natatorium on Friday evening.

After three days of competition, the Wright State Raiders held onto their lead in women's action, racking up 526.5 points to this point. UW-Green Bay held it's own, remaining in second place (478), while UW-Milwaukee (421.5) moved into third-place past Illinois-Chicago (308). Butler is sixth with 181 points.

On the men's side, UW-Green Bay overtook Wright State for the lead with 502 points. The Raiders are still within earshot with 464 points. Cleveland State (436), UW-Milwaukee (312), Illinois-Chicago (242) and Butler (181) trail the leaders.

Wright State started off hot, with both Raider squads winning the 200-yard medley relay.

The Wright State women then pulled off two more wins, as Melissa Schmidt won the 400-yard IM (4:35.11), while Jackie Dexter took the 100-yard butterfly (56.87).

UW-Milwaukee added a pair of wins, as Kelly Goetsch triumphed in the 200-yard free (1:54.62) and Kristin Cefalu won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.86).

For UW-Green Bay, Laura Brager helped the Phoenix remain in second-place with a win in the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 58.38.

For the Flames, the youth made a movement on day three.

The best finish of the night was turned in by freshman Christine Hare, as she took third-place in the 200-yard free (1:55.66). Hare was the top qualifier in that event from preliminaries.

Another rookie, Alicia Perry took fourth-place in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.88), while fellow newcomer Vanessa Segovia finished fifth in the rugged 400-yard IM (4:38.37).

UIC's 200-yard medley relay team of Shannon Sterne, Perry, Stephanie Murphy and Stephanie Brane took fourth in 1:52.66.

 

 

For the men, UW-Green Bay used a trio of top finishes to move into the lead.

Zach Hansen and John Regnitz got things started for the Phoenix in the 100-yard fly, as the duo took the first two places. Hansen finished in 49.95, while Regnitz touched at 50.49.

In the 100-yard breaststroke, Matt Schoen of UW-Green Bay prevailed, winning in a swift 57.74.

The Phoenix then pulled off another one-two special, as Eric Hirsbrunner (51.53) and Hansen (51.84) grabbed the top two spots in the 100-yard backstroke.

Cleveland State's Warren Vickers won the 200-yard free in 1:40.37.

The UIC men received a boost from prolific Paul Torres. The Flames' senior captain won the 400-yard IM in 3:58.21, while teammate Enric Claret finished third in 4:02.61.

Senior David Kimmerly finished seventh in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 52.75.

In diving action, Brandi Goettsch was the top qualifier for tomorrow's one-meter finals, while Trevor Downing is the men's top qualifier on the three-meter board.

Andrea Bove and Shannon Joseph advance to finals tomorrow in the one-meter event, as they finished five-six.

Michael Magee and Joe Scharnak each advanced to tomorrow's three-meter finals, with Magee in sixth and Scharnak in eighth.

Trials begin tomorrow at 10:30 AM, while finals begin at 6:00 PM at the UIC Natatorium.
