Chicago, Ill. - The UIC men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed well in day one of the Horizon League Championships, as Enric Claret and the men's 400-yard medley relay team set school records to highlight the day for the Flames at Cleveland State.

In diving action, senior Michael Magee was excellent, taking second on the one-meter board with a score of 254.80.

For the women on the boards, sophomore Caitlin Carey took third-place with a score of 399.85. Newcomer Tara Goodwin added an eighth-place finish (360.95) for the Flames.

Claret, a gritty warrior, had an outstanding swim in the 200-yard IM. Still recovering from off-season shoulder surgery, Claret was able to grab the runner-up spot in that event with a school-record time of 1:51.39.

The youthful men's 400-yard medley relay team of freshmen Ari Bernstein, Adan Jimenez, LeRoy Stevens and the veteran Claret finished in fifth, but finished with a school-record time of 3:24.99.

For the women, freshman Laura Martensen swiped a fifth-place finish for UIC in the 500-yard free in 5:08.51.

Both squads are back at it on Friday at Cleveland State. For complete results visit: http://csuvikings.ocsn.com/sports/w-swim/stats/022503aaa.html.
