Chicago, Ill. - The 2002 Horizon League Championships kicked off on Wednesday afternoon with women's three-meter and men's one-meter diving trials at the UIC Natatorium.

Leading after the first-round on the women's side is Youngstown State senior Brandi Goettsch, who's eleven-dive score of 428.80 puts her in great position for the finals.

Last year's championships diver of the meet, Wright State's Roberta Borkowski, is currently second with 404.25 points.

Youngstown State qualified three athletes into the finals, including Goettsch, Kalyn Leveto ( 3rd-402.80) and Mandie Smail (4th-394.85).

Host Illinois-Chicago sent two divers to the finals, as seniors Andrea Bove (5th-387.15) and Shannon Joseph (8th-369.95) performed well.

Also with two qualifiers was UW-Milwaukee, with Hannah Burgard (6th-385.60) and Krystina Herzog (7th-378.60) moving into tomorrow's action.

On the men's side, UW-Milwaukee's Nic Seider finished the trials with the day's best score with 295.30 points. Chris Jones of Cleveland State is currently second with 263.65 points.

Wright State qualified three divers into finals, as Brett Duell (4th-245.30), Warrick Mann (5th-235.40) and Trevor Downing (6th-220.85) are in the hunt.

Illinois-Chicago sent a pair of male divers onto the second day, with Mike Magee sitting in third (253.00) and Joe Scharnak in eighth with 206.20 points.

Brandon Kelly of UW-Geen Bay advanced in seventh place with 220.40.

Finals of these events begin at 2:00 PM tomorrow, Thursday, February 28, while swimming trials begin at 10:30 AM tomorrow at the UIC Natatorium.
