CHICAGO - The UIC swimming and diving teams opened up the 2010 Horizon League championships with strong showings by both teams in the first day of competition at the UIC Natatorium on Wednesday evening.

After eight events, the defending champion men's team accumulated 129 points and sit in third place behind Cleveland State (142) and Milwaukee (131). The women's squad is currently in fourth place with 85 points, behind Milwaukee (111), Wright State (106) and Green Bay (106).

The men's 200 free relay were barely nipped by Cleveland State, as Steve Yemm, Mark Kalafut, Brenden Dougherty and Brian Anderson finished second with a time of 1:21.39.

Flames distance swimmers made their presence known in the lone individual event in the water on Wednesday, as McKinzie Jacobs (10:13.14) and Zach Van Swol (9:23.20) both placed third in the 1000 free finals.

Jacobs, who made the podium out of the second-fastest heat, improved her personal best by over 30 seconds, just missing the school record. Van Swol broke his own school record by two seconds in his first of many individual events this championship weekend.

On the boards, freshman Mike Greco and Matt Farley both advanced to the evening three-meter finals, placing sixth (248.95) and eighth (202.35), respectively.

The Flames return to action on Thursday morning, beginning with the preliminary rounds of the 500 and 50 free as well as the women's one-meter diving competition.
