Feb. 21, 2008
Cleveland, Ohio - Andrea Giczewski brought the first individual title to the Flames on Thursday evening at the 2008 Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships, capturing the 50-yard freestyle title in a school record-setting time of 23.44 seconds. The senior captain arrived at the championships with the fastest time in the league, a position she held all season long. Giczewski sent a clear message to her competitors in the preliminary rounds when she was the lone entrant to break 24 seconds en route to the finals. In the men's 50 free, UIC had two athletes qualify for the final. Cameron Seebeck improved upon a 2007 seventh-place finish, taking fifth this time around, in 20.91. Dan Hare showed his impressive versatility, placing sixth in a personal best effort of 20.97. Andrew Schmitt, a butterfly specialist throughout the season, carved over nine seconds off his previous personal best in the men's 500 free final, placing third in 4:34.35, a mere six seconds off of first place in the middle-distance event. Other top finishers of the day include Evan Dunn's fourth place showing in the 200 IM and Sonia Peterson taking seventh in the one-meter diving finals. Both the men's and women's teams remain in fourth place with two days remaining in the competition. The swimming and diving squad returns to action Friday afternoon with the 100-yard fly, men's one-meter dive finals, 200-yard free and the 400 IM.
