Chicago, Ill. - Competing against more talented teams will make your team better in the long run.

UIC head coach Paul Moniak believes that adage to be true, as the UIC men's swimming and diving squad was defeated by a very talented Northwestern squad 143-93 Friday night at Flames Natatorium.

The Illinois State women's team also paid a visit to the West Side, beating the UIC women 168-131.

"I thought we matched-up very well with Northwestern on a few events and considering their level of competition," Moniak said about his men's team.

Paul Torres paced the Flames once again, winning the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:05.39, a new season-best for the senior captain.

On a side note for Torres, the Morton Grove native competed against his younger brother Louis, who competed for Northwestern. The elder Torres got the best of his little brother on this night, edging him in both breaststroke events.

"There was a little sibling rivalry going on between the two Torres brothers," said Moniak. "It's always in a good favor, but outside the pool the two are very supportive of each other."

Jamie Redway led the way for the UIC women's squad, winning the 1000-yard freestyle (10:43.04) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:17.70).

Right on Redway's toes is Christine Hare, who is beginning to make a statement for the Flames. The freshman from Lockport, Ill. was the runner-up to Redway in the 500 and 1000-yard free races, making this mid and long distance free duo one to be reckoned with.

"Those two (Redway and Hare) are starting to be really good for us," Moniak said. "They both had great meets."

Diving helped the Flames as well, as Caitlin Carey was victorious on the one-meter board (224.70) and Andrea Bove took the three-meter event with a score of 231.20.

Moniak also pointed to the Flames win in the women's 200-yard freestyle relay closing out the meet as a big booster. The team of Julie-Anne Chico, Alicia Perry, Stephanie Brane and Stephanie Murphy swam a season-best 1:42.52.

Both squads will make reentries into the pool next Friday and Saturday, as the Flames travel to Wisconsin-Milwaukee to compete in the Bill Ritter Invitational.
