Chicago, Ill. UIC softball co-head coaches Sarah O'Malley-Fisher and Tom Gray have announced that Melinda Macias (Chino, Calif./Don Antonio Lugo), Ashley Hewett (La Palma, Calif./John F. Kennedy) and Shannon Kehr (Petaluma,Calif./Petaluma) have signed National Letters of Intent to play for the Flames in 2009.

Macias was a three-time All-Mount Baldy League First Team selection for Don Antonio Lugo High School. The outfielder was also a three-time scholar athlete award recipient.

"Melinda is an outstanding hitter who should step in and contribute immediately for the program, She has a confident relaxed approach at the plate." said Gray. "She plays at a level and for a team that is preparing her to be an exceptional softball player. Melinda is the type of player that seems to be tuned into the game at all times."

Hewett received the "Michelle Carew Award" as a junior at Kennedy High School. This is a prestigious award that is granted to student-athletes who display extraordinary inspiration for their team and school.

"Ashley is a very talented pitcher that does not just rely on her natural ability, but is constantly striving to make herself better through hard work and attention to detail," said O'Malley-Fisher. "We believe that she is capable of beating any team on our schedule."

Both players compete for the Corona Angels Fastpitch Travel Team. Macias competes for Marty Tyson and Hewett plays for Phil Adishian and Tony Genovese.

Kehr, a California native, helped guide Petaluma High School to a North Coast Section championship and was named Offensive Player of the Year in 2007. The utility player was a two-time First Team All-Empire selection and two-time First Team All-League recipient. Kehr was also named a 2007 First Team All-State selection and received the 2005 Rookie of the Year award.

"Shannon's athletic ability is apparent when you watch her play there is a blend of speed, power and agility that allows her to make the game look so easy," said Gray. "She will be capable of playing both the infield and outfield for us. We expect her athletic ability to make her not just a solid defensive player, but also a force at the plate."

Kehr plays for the Strike Zone travel team coached by Don Ford.

UIC kicks off the 2008 season at the San Diego Tournament on February 9-10. The Flames battle Stanford in their regular season opener on Feb. 9 at 1:00 p.m. CST.
