Softball Posts Impressive GPA

CHICAGO - The National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) announced its top-10 all-academic team rankings from the 2011-12 academic year. The Flames posted a cumulative 3.47 grade-point average, which missed the top-ten honors by only .063.

The Flames, who had five members on the 2011-12 roster enrolled in UIC's Honors College, collected a 3.47 for the second consecutive school year, while completing the spring semester with an overall 3.54.

Among the top student-athletes at UIC, Coryn Schmit, a senior infielder, was named to the Capital One Academic All-American Third Team and Capital One Academic All-District for her cumulative 3.98 GPA as an honors student in UIC's kinesiology program.

Schmit was also named the athletic department's Female Student-Athlete of the Year, along with teammate Jacki Fletcher, for the second year in a row.

For the spring semester, there were four UIC softball members with a flawless 4.0 GPA, among them, Natalie Hernandez, Kara Komp, Melissa Preish and Fletcher. Jenna Marsalli, Teresa Aguilar, Schmit and Kelsey Sturgeon earned between a 3.5-3.99. Erica Hampton, Courtney Heeley, Ashley Hewett, Melinda Macias and Breanna Warren earned between a 3.0-3.49.
