CHICAGO - The UIC softball team posted two wins Sept. 15, defeating Northern Illinois, 3-1 and Heartland Community College, 12-3 at Flames Field in Chicago, Ill. The Flames play host to a doubleheader against Northwestern Saturday at 11:00 a.m. (CT).

"It was great to have the chance to compete against Northern Illinois and Heartland Community College this past weekend," head softball coach Michelle Venturella said. "We have several new student-athletes on the team, so it was good to see what they are capable of doing. Our returners are doing a nice job of helping the newcomers realize the direction that this program is headed. We are at the beginning of this journey together, and we know there will be ups and down, but this group is determined to do the work and get the results they desire."

Senior pitcher Devin Miller (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) piloted the Flames to a 3-1 victory over the Huskies.

Freshman Lindsay Melson (Harvard, Ill./Marengo Community) started and pitched four innings, while Bridget Boyle (St. John, Ind./Lake Central) closed out the final two innings to propel UIC to a 12-3 win over Heartland.

UIC welcomes the Wildcats to Flames Field Saturday in a doubleheader that begins at 11:00 a.m.

"We are looking forward to playing Northwestern at home this Saturday," Venturella said. "They always compete at a high level, and we are eagerly anticipating the challenge."
