CHICAGO – On Saturday, Sept. 7, the UIC softball alumni gathered at Flames Field for the Sixth Annual UIC Softball Alumni Game, where current and former players were able to meet and challenge each other to a slow-pitch softball game.

“It is one of my favorite days because our team has a chance to meet some of the women who paved the way for their opportunity to play at UIC,” head coach Michelle Venturella said.  “It is always fun to hear the stories of the past teams and to learn about the history of the program.  We were very pleased that former coach, Mike McGovern and his wife were able to attend this year's event.  Even though I'm sure the alumni were pretty sore the next day, I'm sure they didn't mind since they beat the current UIC team.”

In all, 35 friends and family of the program were present, including 14 alumni and members of the 1994 College World Series team, who were led by McGovern.  This spring will mark the 20th anniversary of the 1994 team, and on Saturday, April 5, 2014, they will be honored as well as all alumni.

“I really enjoy coming back for the alumni game,” said Julie Heitman, formerly Sewell.  “It is a great opportunity to get together with teammates and share some laughs and memories. It is also nice to meet the current team that is carrying on the tradition of excellence. UIC softball is a family that I have always felt fortunate to be a part of.”

“It was awesome going back to UIC for the annual alumni game,” Sue Asher, formerly North, said.  “I love being able to meet the current players, parents and new coaching staff.  Coach Venturella does a great job at making the alums feel welcomed back to UIC.  It meant a lot to me to see Coach McGovern and his wife, and I am looking forward to celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Women's College World Series team.”

The UIC softball team will now prepare for its eight-game fall season, which gets underway on Saturday at Flames Field.  The Flames are scheduled to go up against Loyola at noon CT and Western Illinois at 4:30 p.m., with Loyola and Western Illinois facing off in-between at 2:15 p.m.

For the remainder of the fall, the Flames will go head-to-head with Northwestern and Eastern Illinois (Sept. 22), Kirkwood Community College and Indiana State (Sept. 28) and Notre Dame and Heartland Community College (Oct. 5) at Flames Field.
