CHICAGO - Facing elimination in the championship game, UIC softball teammates Coryn Schmit and Jenna Marsalli, members of the 18A Stone City Sharks summer squad, railed past the San Diego Renegades in 10 innings, 9-7, to claim the 2010 ASA national title in Hemet, Calif on August 1-8th.

"We are so proud of Coryn and Jenna for this tremendous accomplishment," said head coach Michelle Venturella. "There is something amazing about winning a championship and to know that two members of our program are coming into this year fresh off of that is wonderful."

Schmit, a 2010 Horizon League All-Newcomer team selection for the Flames last season, batted an eye-popping .481 in 10 contests over the course of the tournament, belting six homers and a triple while manning home plate.

Playing second base for Stone City, newcomer Marsalli tailed a trio of home runs, two doubles and five singles for a .400 average in the Sharks run to the title.

Responding well against tough competition, seven of the nine home runs hit between the two sluggers fell during the final two days of the tournament.

Schmit, Marsalli and the entire UIC softball contingent will take to the field for the first time this fall on September 11 in an intersquad scrimmage, beginning at 11:30 a.m. The annual Flames Alumni game will follow the scrimmage at 2 p.m.
