Coryn Schmit Named Female Scholar-Athlete Of The Month

INDIANAPOLIS – Coryn Schmit has been selected as the Horizon League’s Female Scholar-Athlete of the Month for May, it was announced from the League headquarters Thursday afternoon.  

Wright State’s baseball student-athlete Michael Timm is the male representative for the month of May.  

During the month, Schmit assisted the Flames to a first-place finish in the Horizon League regular season, along with the rights to host the conference championship at Flames Field. She led UIC with a .375 batting average, .625 slugging percentage and a .524 on-base figure.

She was selected to the all-Horizon League second team, along with being named the UIC softball team’s inaugural “Leadership Award” winner. The award is selected by the coaches and given to the member of the team who has showed exemplary leadership on and off the field.

The first baseman earned her third consecutive UIC Female Student-Athlete of the year honor, she was named a first team Academic All-American; only the second in UIC history. Schmit was considered for the honor after being named to the first team Academic All-District Five team.

Schmit graduated with summa cum laude honors, a 4.0 grade point average and a degree in kinesiology in May.
