June 18, 2014
CHICAGO – The Horizon League announced on Wednesday that 10 UIC student-athletes garnered Academic All-League recognition for the 2014 spring semester. Softball led the way with three honorees, while baseball and women’s tennis earned two apiece. Men’s and women’s track and field and men’s tennis grabbed one laurel each.
“This year was another outstanding season for our student-athletes in the classroom,” said Athletic Director Jim Schmidt. “Our student-athletes posted a 3.01 GPA this past semester and 27 individuals received a perfect 4.0. I couldn’t be more proud of our student-athletes and all that they accomplish.”
Jacki Fletcher, Natalie Hernandez and Bridget Boyle represent the softball team on the All-League squad. Fletcher was recently named to the Capital One Academic All-America First Team after she completed her kinesiology degree and compiled an unblemished 4.0 cumulative GPA. She is one of just 10 UIC student-athletes in history to earn the laurel.
Baseball took home a pair of honorees for the second straight year as senior Alex Jurich and junior Tyler Detmer took home accolades. Women’s tennis also garnered two awards in seniors Jana Knoppe and Kathryn Sharples. Christopher Cole holds a 4.0 cumulative GPA as an business major and represents the men’s tennis team, while Max Downey and Mariya Denisenko (4.0 GPA) represent the men’s and women’s track and field squads, respectively.
The Horizon League recognizes student-athletes with seasonal Academic All-League Teams in each of its 19 championship sports. To be eligible for Academic All-Horizon League consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.00 scale) and have completed at least one year at the member institution, having earned 24 semester-hour or 36 quarter-hour credits.
