CHICAGO – The UIC softball team begins its post-season run Thursday at 11:00 a.m. (CT) as the top-seeded Flames face fifth-seeded Wright State at Flames Field. The 2013 Horizon League Softball Championship began Wednesday with two games.
SCOUTING THE FLAMES
UIC holds a 23-23 overall record and a 16-5 record in the Horizon League … Natalie Hernandez leads the Flames offensively with a .377 batting average … senior Melissa Preish paces the team with seven homeruns and a .542 slugging percentage … senior Coryn Schmit leads the team in RBI with 32 … senior Devin Miller holds a 22-14 (3.39 ERA) record inside the circle … she has 241.2 innings of work under her belt and has blanked 187 batters.
UIC VERSUS WRIGHT STATE IN THE 2013 SEASON
The Flames swept the Raiders in a three-game series on April 20-21 … during the opening doubleheader, UIC dropped Wright State 1-0 and 8-1 … on the day, freshman Laura Swan had four hits and three RBI … during the series finale, the Flames collected 11 hits to Wright State’s one on the day as the Flames swept the Raiders 8-0 in six innings … senior Devin Miller pitched all 20 innings of the series and allowed only seven hits … in the weekend series, UIC collected 17 runs, 26 hits and 11 RBI.
HORIZON LEAGUE HARDWARE
Devin Miller was named the Horizon League Pitcher of the Year … head coach Michelle Venturella was selected as the Coach of the Year … the Flames placed five members on the all-Horizon League First Team, one on the Second Team and one to the all-Newcomer Team … it was the second time that Venturella has been selected as the Horizon League Coach of the Year … she also earned the honor in 2009 … Natalie Hernandez, seniors Kara Komp, Melissa Preish and Devin Miller, along with freshman designated player Laura Swan were named to the all-Horizon League First Team … Coryn Schmit earned Second Team honors, while Swan was also named to the all-Newcomer Team.

Schmit earned her second Capital One Academic All-District 5 honor … she now advances to the pool of candidates who will be considered for Academic All-American status, voting closes Tuesday, May 14 … 2012 Schmit was named to the Capital One Academic All-District team ... she also earned 2012 Academic All-American Honors (third team) ... 2011, 12, 13 UIC Female Student-Athlete of the Year ... member of UIC's Honors College (student must uphold a 3.5 GPA) ... 2011 homerun leader with 10 ... led UIC to a 2011 Horizon League Championship to earn an NCAA berth ... 2010 Horizon League All-Newcomer team ... 2012 Horizon League Pre-Season Team ... Fletcher earned Capital One Academic All-District 5 honors … she now advances to the pool of candidates who will be considered for Academic All-American status, voting closes Tuesday, May 14 … two-time UIC Female Student-Athlete of the Year award winner … department of Kinesiology and Nutrition’s “Top Grade in KN 252” Award … Dean’s List in 2011-12 … Golden Key International Society Member, the top 15% of the junior class … honor roll member for four-consecutive semesters ... 2012 General Chemistry Award Winner, awarded by the chemistry department to three out of over 2,300 students ... honors excellence in chemistry 112 and 114 ... currently enrolled in the Honors College.
KOMP NAMED HORIZON LEAGUE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
Senior Kara Komp was selected as the March Scholar-Athlete of the Month … she is a member of UIC’s Honors College as an urban planning major, where she holds a flawless 4.0 in her field of study … Dean’s List member from 2009-13 … during the month of March, Komp hit .407 … in 54 appearances at the plate, she tallied 22 hits and scored 11 runs.
UIC’S HORIZON LEAGUE WEEKLY AWARD WINNERS
The Flames have collected six Horizon League awards this season … on March 18 Courtney Heeley was named the Player of the Week, while Miller earned Pitcher of the Week honors … on April 3, Laura Swan was selected as the Player of the Week and Miller as the Horizon League pitcher … Natalie Hernandez then received recognition on April 8 as the Player of the Week … Miller then notched her third Pitcher of the Week honor this season on April 22.
LAST TIME OUT
With a 9-4 victory over Cleveland State Sunday, the Flames clinched a first-place finish in the Horizon League … Devin Miller held Cleveland State to just five hits, while the UIC team compiled 14 hits on three different Vikings’ pitchers …Miller improved her overall record to 22-14, including 15-3 in the Horizon League … she has won eight of her last nine games from inside the circle.
