SCOUTING THE PHOENIX Green Bay is 22-26 and 11-12 in the Horizon League ... Miranda Reinke leads the team with a .336 average with 43 hits ... Amanda Omahen has 24 RBI to lead the Phoenix ... Green Bay has thrown five pitchers, with Allison Goecks (10-11/3.01) and Ashley Nannemann (11-12/3.52) being the main pitchers ... Hailey Mohrfeld is a perfect 8-8 on stolen bases.
SERIES HISTORY WITH GREEN BAY UIC leads the series with Green Bay, 55-15 ... the teams last met on April 26 during the final game of a three-games series at Flames Field in Chicago ... UIC swept the Phoenix in play ... it was UIC's sole sweep of the season ... UIC won the first game 5-4 in 10 innings, with the game ending with Schmit's second game of the contest, including the walk-off home run ... the Flames then run-ruled Green Bay, 9-1, in six innings ... the series was closed out with a 2-1 win for UIC.
FLAMES AT THE 2011 HORIZON LEAGUE TOURNAMENT The Flames captured the first-place crown during the 2011 Horizon League Tournament ... en route to the Championships, UIC opened the tournament with a 9-0 victory over Cleveland State on May 11 ... in eight innings, UIC defeated Loyola, 6-2 on May 12 ... UIC then closed out the tournament with a best-of-three against Butler ... the Flames won the first contest, 2-1 on May 13 ... the Bulldogs then defeated the Flames, 1-0 on May 14 ... with the final game, UIC won in a 5-3 outcome on May 15 to claim first place, and continue its season at the NCAA Regional at Louisville.
MORE THAN JUST A PRETTY FACE: ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT HONOREE Schmit was named to the Capital One Academic All-District Team ... the honor recognizes athletic ability, as well as students in the classroom ... Schmit is eligible for Academic All-American consideration ... District-5 is comprised of Division I student-athletes from Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota and Ohio ... Schmit carries a 4.0 grade-point-average as a Kinesiology major ... she is a member of the Honors College ... she is a two-time UIC Female Student-Athlete of the Year recipient ... she is one-of just two players in the District to post a 4.0 GPA.
HORIZON LEAGUE HONORS Preish was named to the first-team All-Horizon League team ... Schmit and senior Melinda Macias received second-team nods ... Preish has played and started in 49 games at her post in center field ... she is currently batting .399. In 148 at-bats on the season she has 31 runs, 59 hits, six doubles, a triple, five home runs and 17 RBI ... she owns a slugging percentage of .554, including an on-base percentage of .483. Additionally, she was recently named the team's "Offensive Player of the Year", which is voted on by the UIC coaching staff ... Schmit earns second-team honors after being selected to the Horizon League pre-season team ... the first baseman has started and played in 50 games this season ... she currently has a .311 batting average; in 167 at-bats she has 29 runs, 52 hits and eight doubles ... Schmit leads the team in home runs and RBI with nine and 39, respectively ... Macias, who was also a second-team selection, holds a .320 batting average. In 175 at-bats, she has 34 runs, 56 hits, 10 doubles, one home run and 14 RBI ... with just one error in right field, Macias has a .978 fielding percentage ... she recently was selected as UIC's "Most Valuable Player".
THE "PREISH" IS RIGHT Preish was selected as a first-team All-Horizon League Player ... she was named the "Horizon League Player of the Week" on April 30 ... she earned the honor after solid play against Green Bay and Youngstown State, where she compiled a .538 batting average, including two home runs ... Preish, who played in four of the five games on the week, compiled a .538 batting average. With 13 at-bats, she had seven hits, one double and two home runs ... her first home run was the game-tying run that kept UIC alive during the first game of the three-game series against Green Bay, which UIC ended up claiming 5-4 in 10 innings ... she posted a perfect 4-for-4 at-bats during the 11-8 victory over Youngstown State, including three base hits, her fifth home run of the season and an RBI ... the junior claimed 14 total bases, and posted a 1.077 slugging percentage, while driving in two runners ... overall on the season, Preish leads the team with her .397 batting average, while batting .404 in league play.
LAST TIME OUT UIC split decisions with Wright State during a twinbill May 5 at Flames Field in Chicago. The Raiders took the first game, 8-4, followed by a Flames victory with a 6-0 shutout. The final series secured UIC's place in the Horizon League Tournament as the No. 3 seed.
2011 HORIZON LEAGUE HONORS - SCHMIT & HERNANDEZ Schmit was a postseason first-team all-Horizon League honoree as she had a league-best slugging percentage of .800, while also leading the Flames in homeruns with six. The first baseman logged 16 RBI in 20 League contests, and concluded the season with a .315 batting average. Hernandez garnered 2011 postseason all-second and all-newcomer Horizon League honors after the shortstop posted a .349 batting average, while committing only four errors on the season. She added nine RBI, three homeruns and a triple during her rookie season.
