May 4, 2012
CHICAGO - Junior first baseman Coryn Schmit of the UIC softball team has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District-5 Team, it was announced by the organization Friday. Capital One, which became the entitlement rights holder to CoSIDA's Academic All-America teams programs in 2011, annually recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
As a First-Team All-District honoree, Schmit is now eligible for Academic All-American consideration. The District-5 Team is comprised of all Division I student-athletes from schools in Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota and Ohio.
"We are very proud of Coryn for this wonderful accomplishment," said head coach Michelle Venturella. "She is well deserving of this honor."
Schmit, who carries a flawless 4.0 grade-point-average as an honors student in UIC's Kinesiology program, has been named the athletic department's Female Student-Athlete of the Year in each of the past two years. She was one-of just two players on the District-5 team to post a perfect 4.0 GPA.
A preseason All-Horizon League First-Team selection, Schmit currently ranks sixth in the Horizon League in home runs (8), while sitting fifth overall in the League in RBI's, with 36 runs driven in. Entering this weekend's final homestand against Wright State, Schmit is hitting .305 - she leads the Flames in at-bats (151), runs scored (27), home runs, RBI and total bases (78). Schmit is also slugging .517 on the season.
Schmit led UIC with 10 home runs as a sophomore, helping lead the Flames to the 2011 Horizon League Tournament Championship. As a freshman (2010), she collected All-Horizon League Newcomer Team honors.
Schmit and the Flames will start a pivotal three-game set versus Horizon League rival Wright State Saturday, with a doubleheader at Flames Field scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. CST. The series will wrap up Sunday afternoon (Noon), when the Flames' three seniors - Ashley Hewett, Melinda Macias and Kelsey Sturgeon, will all be honored in a pre-game ceremony.
