    CHICAGO – The UIC softball team will compete in its final regular season conference series Saturday and Sunday against Cleveland State in hopes of maintaining control of its first-place spot in the Horizon League. Saturday is a doubleheader that begins at Noon (CT), followed by a single game that will honor the team’s six seniors prior to the first pitch at Noon.

    SCOUTING THE FLAMES

    UIC holds a 21-22 overall record and is 14-4 in the Horizon League … junior Natalie Hernandez is batting .385 and leads the team offensively … Senior Coryn Schmit has 30 RBI … five members of the Flames are batting over .300 (Hernandez, Kara Komp, Melissa Preish, Laura Swan and Schmit) … senior Devin Miller has a 20-14 record inside the circle … she holds a 3.54 ERA and in 227.2 innings pitched, she has struck out 176 batters.

    SCOUTING THE VIKINGS

    Cleveland State is 20-23 this season and has a 9-7 Horizon League record … the Vikings are currently in third place in the standings … Erica McNew leads the team with a .423 batting average … she has an .862 slugging percentage with 17 homeruns and 36 RBI … Susan Knight has pitched 163.1 innings for Cleveland State and holds a 14-9 record with a 2.70 ERA.

    CAPITAL ONE ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT TEAM SELECTIONS: THE SCHMIT FILE

    Schmit earned her second Capital One Academic All-District 5 honor … it was released by CoSIDA Friday morning … in 2012 Schmit was named to the Capital One Academic All-District team ... she also earned 2012 Academic All-American Honors (third team) ... 2011, 12, 13 UIC Female Student-Athlete of the Year ... member of UIC's Honors College (student must uphold a 3.5 GPA)  ... 2011 homerun leader with 10 ... led UIC to a 2011 Horizon League Championship to earn an NCAA berth ... 2010 Horizon League All-Newcomer team ... 2012 Horizon League Pre-Season Team ... G.P.P.A. for physical therapy, which secures a spot in UIC’s graduate school … Dean’s List member seven-straight semesters … kinesiology student-athlete with the highest GPA during the 2011-12 school year … April 2011 Horizon League Scholar-Athlete of the Month.

    CAPITAL ONE ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT TEAM SELECTIONS: THE FLETCHER FILE

    Fletcher earned Capital One Academic All-District 5 honors Friday morning … two-time UIC Female Student-Athlete of the Year award winner … department of Kinesiology and Nutrition’s “Top Grade in KN 252” Award … Dean’s List in 2011-12 … Golden Key International Society Member, the top 15% of the junior class … honor roll member for four-consecutive semesters ... 2012 General Chemistry Award Winner, awarded by the chemistry department to three out of over 2,300 students ... honors excellence in chemistry 112 and 114 ... currently enrolled in the Honors College.

    UIC VERSUS CLEVELAND STATE IN 2012

    The Flames won two in the three-game series in the opening conference series in 2012 at Flames Field … the Vikings won the opening game 3-1 on March 24 … UIC then won 8-1 in the second contest on March 24 and 6-5 in 10 innings on March 25.

    HORIZON LEAGUE STANDINGS

    The Flames have a 14-4 Horizon League record and are tied for first place with Loyola … Cleveland State is in third place with a 9-7 record, followed closely by Valparaiso in fourth place, 9-8 … Wright State is in fifth place at 9-9 … Youngstown State is in sixth place (8-10) … Green Bay is in seventh place and Detroit is in eighth place with 5-12 and 2-16, respectively.

    KOMP NAMED HORIZON LEAGUE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

    Senior Kara Komp was selected as the March Scholar-Athlete of the Month … she is a member of UIC’s Honors College as an urban planning major, where she holds a flawless 4.0 in her field of study … Dean’s List member from 2009-13 … during the month of March, Komp hit .407 … in 54 appearances at the plate, she tallied 22 hits and scored 11 runs.

    UIC’S HORIZON LEAGUE WEEKLY AWARD WINNERS

    The Flames have collected six Horizon League awards this season … on March 18 Courtney Heeley was named the Player of the Week, while Miller earned Pitcher of the Week honors … on April 3, Laura Swan was selected as the Player of the Week and Miller as the Horizon League pitcher … Natalie Hernandez then received recognition on April 8 as the Player of the Week … Miller then notched her third Pitcher of the Week honor this season on April 22.

    LAST TIME OUT

    UIC faced Northwestern Wednesday in a make-up game … the Flames battled back from an eight-run deficit to score four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and one in the bottom of the seventh, but Northwestern maintained control to defeat UIC 8-5 at Flames Field.
