    CHICAGO - The UIC softball team (25-24/11-8 Horizon) closes out the regular season with a three-game series against Wright State. UIC will play host to a doubleheader Saturday at 1:00 p.m. (CT), followed by a single game that will honor UIC's three seniors Sunday at Noon.

    LEAD-OFF HITS

    SCOUTING THE FLAMES UIC holds a record of 25-24, with a 11-8 record in the Horizon League, currently sitting in third place ... Melissa Preish continues to lead the Flames with a .397 average, and possesses 30 runs, 56 hits and 17 RBI ... Coryn Schmit added two home runs in the past week, to place her total at eight, while and 36 RBI ... Kara Komp is 7-for-7 on stolen bases ... Devin Miller (13-12/3.91) and Ashley Hewett (11-12/3.40) continue to split time inside the circle ... Miller has faced 872 batters on the season, fanning 152 in 179.0 innings ... Hewett has contended 666 batters, blanking 117 in 142.0 innings.

    SCOUTING THE RAIDERS Wright State has a 22-30 overall record, with a 9-12 record in the Horizon League, and are tied for seventh place in the league standings ... Kristi Boreing leads the Raiders with a .333 batting average, including 24 runs, 56 hits, 22 home runs and two home runs ... Chelsea Archer has 23 RBI on the season, leading Wright State in the category ... the Raiders feature three pitchers, Krystian DeWitt (15-25/3.02), Chelsea Contant (5-4/4.00 ERA) and Sarah Shanika (2-1/5.86 ERA).

    SERIES HISTORY WITH WRIGHT STATE UIC leads the series 46-12 ... the teams last met on May 8 ... in the 2011 three-game series, UIC won the first game, 7-4 ... the Raiders then won the final two games, 2-1 and 5-1.

     

     

    CALIFORNIA GIRLS, THEY'RE UNFORGETTABLE UIC will honor its three seniors before Sunday's single game ... all California natives, Melinda Macias, Kelsey Sturgeon and Ashley Hewett will compete in their final game at Flames Field ... Macias, a Chino, Calif., native is a four-year starter at the right-field post for UIC ... she has played and started in 197 games during her career ... through nearly four seasons, Macias holds a .325 batting average, has compiled 115 total runs and 216 hits for 282 total bases ... she has 79 RBI and an on-base percentage of .399 ... Sturgeon hails from Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. ... she is a four-year member of the UIC squad ... through nearly four seasons, she has appeared in 143 games ... she hit her first home run in the bottom of the seventh inning of the opening game of the Horizon League Tournament to extend the game to extra innings against Butler ... Hewett is from La Palma, Calif., ... she is a four-year starter for the Flames ... she has split her time between designated player and pitcher ... Hewett has played in 175 games during her career as a Flame, starting in 175 of them ... in four seasons, she has had 520 total at-bats, 53 runs, 144 hits, 16 home runs and 74 total RBI ... inside the circle, Hewett holds an overall record of 45-41, with a 3.56 ERA, and has fanned 463 batters in 555.3 innings through almost four complete seasons of play.

    STREAKING FLAMES UIC recently concluded its longest winning streak of the season with five consecutive wins ... the Flames began the streak with back-to-back wins (5-3 and 1-0) over first-place Horizon League team, Valparaiso ... UIC then swept Green Bay, 5-4 and 9-1 during the twinbill, followed by a 2-1 win during the final single game ... the Flames then picked up an 11-8 victory over Youngstown State, before the Penguins snapped the streak with a 9-7 win on April 29.

    THE "PREISH" IS RIGHT Preish was named the "Horizon League Player of the Week" on April 30 ... she earns the honor after solid play against Green Bay and Youngstown State, where she compiled a .538 batting average, including two home runs ... Preish, who played in four of the five games on the week, compiled a .538 batting average. With 13 at-bats, she had seven hits, one double and two home runs ... her first home run was the game-tying run that kept UIC alive during the first game of the three-game series against Green Bay, which UIC ended up claiming 5-4 in 10 innings ... she posted a perfect 4-for-4 at-bats during the 11-8 victory over Youngstown State, including three base hits, her fifth home run of the season and an RBI ... the junior claimed 14 total bases, and posted a 1.077 slugging percentage, while driving in two runners ... overall on the season, Preish leads the team with her .397 batting average, while batting .404 in league play.

    LAST TIME OUT UIC extended its winning streak to six games as the team defeated Youngstown State 11-8 Sunday, posting 14 hits in the contest ... the Penguins then defeated UIC in a 9-7 outcome during the final rain-shortened series of the weeken.

    HORIZON LEAGUE PRESEASON PICK A 2012 Horizon League Tournament championship gave the Flames their first NCAA berth since 2004. UIC concluded the 2011 season with the top fielding percentage in the league, .968 percent. Schmit tied for third place in homeruns with 10, while Miller blanked 227 batters to finish third in strikeouts.

    2011 HORIZON LEAGUE HONORS - SCHMIT & HERNANDEZ Schmit was a postseason first-team all-Horizon League honoree as she had a league-best slugging percentage of .800, while also leading the Flames in homeruns with six. The first baseman logged 16 RBI in 20 League contests, and concluded the season with a .315 batting average. Hernandez garnered 2011 postseason all-second and all-newcomer Horizon League honors after the shortstop posted a .349 batting average, while committing only four errors on the season. She added nine RBI, three homeruns and a triple during her rookie season.
