CHICAGO - Ashley Hewett of the UIC softball team was named Horizon League pitcher of the week for the period ending May 2, the league office announced on Monday afternoon.

The LaPalma, Calif. native would scatter a mere eight hits in 18.1 innings of work last week, striking out 24 with victories at Loyola on Thursday and the series opener and finale at Detroit over the weekend.

After surrendering four hits and a walk in Rogers Park to aide the Flames to a 5-0 shutout over Loyola, the sophomore would be a lone error away from a perfect five-inning performance, matching her career-best with 12 strikeouts in the Flames' 12-0, no-hitter win over the Titans on Saturday.

Hewett's ERA in league play currently puts her as the sixth-best at a 2.89, and has the fourth-highest strikeout count against league foes with 65 thus far this season.

The Flames return to action this weekend, closing out the regular season with a three-game series against Wright State at home, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
