April 23, 2012
CHICAGO - Sophomore Courtney Heeley has been named the College Sports Madness Player of the Week, it was announced Monday afternoon following a single game against Northern Illinois Wednesday and a three-game series versus Valparaiso.
During the four games, Heeley compiled a .250 batting average on eight at-bats, while collecting five RBI off of a grand slam hit in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift UIC to a 5-3 victory Saturday. The win over the Crusaders was their first loss during the conference schedule, before UIC handed them a second loss Sunday in the final game of the series.
Heeley, a left-handed left fielder, made a noteworthy play in the final game against the Crusaders as there was a hard hit ball to left field that Heeley caught, before throwing out a runner attempting to tag up from third base. Heeley provided the throw, while catcher Teresa Aguilar placed the tag.
Heeley and the rest of the UIC team returns to action Wednesday in a doubleheader against Green Bay at 3:00 p.m. (CT) at Flames Field in Chicago, Ill.
