Softball to Challenge IUPUI on Tuesday at Flames Field

CHICAGO – The UIC softball team (12-20) gets set to take on IUPUI (18-17) in a non-conference tilt on Tuesday beginning at 4 p.m. CT at Flames Field. The matchup will mark the fifth all-time meeting between the two teams and the first since UIC Hall of Famer Amanda Rivera was named head coach of the Jaguars in 2012.

UIC is back at Flames Field after hosting Detroit (April 18-19) and winning the series, 2-1. Senior Jenna Marsalli produced five hits over the three games with a .500 batting average and one home run, while sophomore Laura Swan (.444), junior Paige Peterson (.400), seniors Natalie Hernandez (.400) and Jacki Fletcher (.364) each had four hits. Sophomore Alice Fitzpatrick owned a 2.06 ERA with one win after appearing in all three games, while redshirt-freshman Lindsay Melson went 1-1 in two appearances.

While heading into the final stretch of the season, Peterson has moved into the top of the rankings with a .435 average with 30 hits in 69 at-bats, followed by Fletcher (.433) and Hernandez (.430). Hernandez is leading the Flames in nearly every other category with 31 runs, 46 hits, eight home runs, 32 RBI and a .766 slugging percentage.

Fitzpatrick holds the best ERA on the season among the pitching staff with 4.32 in 68.0 innings pitched, while she has produced three wins in 10 starts with 43 strikeouts. Melson is coming off of her first collegiate appearance and start after picking up her first win following a 2.1 inning relief outing.

IUPUI enters into competition having won seven of its last 10 games, including series victories over South Dakota State and South Dakota. The Jaguars last faced the Flames during the 2012 season, when the teams split a doubleheader at Flames Field.

The Jaguars have six starters hitting above .300 this season with Taylor Chitwood (.403), Roni Patterson (.375), Sarah Lawrence (.351), Morgan Schlobohm (.340), Angela Bartucci (.337) and Ali Mosier (.336). Patterson owns the most hits (42), homers (6) and the best slugging percentage (.661), while Mosier has 28 runs and 29 RBI to lead the team.

On the mound for IUPUI, Cassie Vodde and Jocelyn Oppenhuis have each received 15 starts and pitched six complete games. Vodde holds a 3.61 ERA through 97.0 innings with a 9-6 record and 34 strikeouts, while Oppenhuis is 5-7 with a 4.49 ERA in 82.2 innings with 65 strikeouts.
