CHICAGO – Softball player Natalie Hernandez has been selected as the UICFlames.com Student-Athlete of the Week for the period of April 1 - 7 as announced by the athletic department on Wednesday morning. Hernandez went 14-of-23 (.609) from the plate with two home runs, while guiding the Flames to an impressive 5-1 record last week versus Horizon League opponents Green Bay and Detroit.
For her efforts, the junior infielder was named the Horizon League Batter of the Week, her second weekly conference award this season. Her two homers came this past weekend in a three-game sweep at Detroit as she tallied slugging percentage of .957 and collected eight RBI on the week.
Hernandez earns her first UICFlames.com award and becomes the second softball player the claim the honor as teammate Courtney Heeley took home the laurel on March 20.
UIC stands atop the Horizon League standings with a record of 7-2 as Loyola and Valparaiso trail with marks of 4-2 and 5-4, respectively. The Flames will be back in action with doubleheader against the Crusaders on Saturday and a single game Sunday.
