INDIANAPOLIS – Senior Natalie Hernandez has been named the Horizon League softball Player of the Week for March 31 – April 6, as announced by the conference office on Monday. While facing Northwestern and Wright State last week, Hernandez produced a .692 batting average with nine hits, two home runs and nine RBI alongside a 1.231 slugging percentage and a .750 on-base percentage.

After falling to the Wildcats, 14-7, on April 2, the Flames came back to take a Horizon League series sweep over the Raiders on April 5-6 with 3-2, 12-3 (5) and 14-6 (6) victories. Hernandez had at least two hits in each game to tally six-consecutive multi-hit games and 11 total this season.

The Glendora, Calif., native had her biggest game of the week in UIC’s second outing with Wright State. Hernandez belted her first career grand slam before coming back in the bottom of the fifth to hit a two-run homer for the game-winning run, marking her third career multi-home run game. Hernandez additionally set a single-game career high with eight RBI in the contest.

Hernandez went 2-for-3 against Northwestern with two runs before heading into the Flames’ first game against Wright State, where she went a perfect 2-for-2 with one walk. In the series finale with the Raiders, Hernandez went 3-for-4 with one double, one walk and three runs.

This marks the fourth honor of Hernandez’s career and the second HL Player of the Week accolade for UIC this season after sophomore Laura Swan earned the honor for the week of March 10-16.

Hernandez and the Flames return to action on Tuesday as they host North Dakota for a doubleheader at Flames Field beginning at 2 p.m. CT.
