Softball Hosts Indiana In Home Opener On Wednesday

Chicago, Ill.- With five tournaments under their belt in six weeks, the Flames softball team is set to host the Indiana Hoosiers in a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 29th at 4 pm (CST) in UIC's home opener. This marks the ninth meeting between the two universities with IU leading the series, 5-3.
The Flames enter Wednesday's contests versus Indiana 9-19 overall, owning the third-best non-league record. Senior shortstop Joyce Cathey leads the Flames with a .338 batting average. Cathey has totaled 27 hits, 11 runs, one double, ten RBI and four home runs on the year.
The Hoosiers enter the doubleheader against the Flames with a 13-11-1 record and are set to kick off Big 10 action this weekend at home versus Ohio State and Penn State. IU is powered by centerfielder Kim Richards with a .302 batting average. In 63 at bats, Richards has 11 runs, 19 hits, five doubles, 14 RBI and has belted five homers on the season.
Indiana is coming off a 2-1 weekend at the 2006 IU Classic versus Western Kentucky and fellow Horizon League member Wright State, March 24-25th. Indiana topped Western Kentucky, 2-1, and the Raiders, 11-1, in the two-day event hosted by the Hoosiers. Indiana's lone loss came from WKU on the last day of the IU Classic. IU fell to the Hilltoppers after owning a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth inning.
UIC's next stop is a Cleveland, Ohio, where the Flames will open Horizon League play with a three-game series with the Vikings over the weekend.
