Softball Continues Hot Streak At Home

Chicago, Ill. - After sweeping last weekend in the UIC Round Robin at Flames Field, the softball team extended its winning streak to four games in preseason action after dropping DePaul (4-3) in a comeback victory, followed by an 8-0 win over St. Joseph's in five innings at home. With the wins, the Flames move to 4-3 in their fall exhibition season. On the afternoon, senior Liz Jacoby led the Flames with a .667 batting average (4 of 6), while totaling three runs scored and three RBI in two games. Sophomore Melissa Marinacci went 3-for-6, notching her first preseason home run. Sophomore Sarah Clynes (2-2) and freshman Chelsea Fuemmeler (1-1) improved their records in the circle, each picking up a win on the day. UIC 4, DePaul 3 Marinacci just slid under the tag of DePaul catcher Kara Amundson to score the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as the UIC softball team rallied for a 4-3 victory over the Blue Demons at Flames Field on Saturday at the Windy City Classic. Junior Brittany Dixon plated the game-winner for the Flames with a sacrifice fly to right field. Marinacci, who went 3-for-3 in the contest and fell a triple short of the cycle, led off the frame with a single and later advanced to third on a throwing error by DePaul shortstop Shea Warren. The comeback helped pitcher Fuemmeler notch her first win of the fall exhibition season. The rookie tossed seven strong innings, allowing three runs on four hits while fanning four. Reliever Meghan Huitink was tagged with the loss for DePaul, surrendering three runs, two earned, on five hits in two innings of work. The Flames trailed 3-0 after the top of the third inning, following a two-run homer by Blue Demons junior Marcy Wilus.
UIC began its comeback in the bottom of the frame as Marinacci launched a solo home run to right field. The score was still 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth when the Flames mounted a two-out rally. Junior Nikki Rogers got things going with a run-scoring double to right and then junior Lauren Brennan knotted the score with a single down the right field line. UIC 8, St. Joseph's 0 The Flames used the comeback win against DePaul to launch an offensive attack onto St. Joseph's in game three of the Windy City Classic, totaling nine hits in five innings for an 8-0 win. Clynes earned her second fall season victory, fanning eight players in the shutout. Jacoby went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI. With UIC leading 1-0 after two innings, freshman Ashlee Ackerman began its onslaught with a single to right field. Dixon followed with a double, sending Ackerman home for a 2-0 advantage, With two on base, Jacoby ripped an RBI double to right field. Junior Nicole Robinson then sacrificed flied to left field and Jacoby scored on a wild pitch for the 5-0 lead after three innings. UIC clinched the victory in the bottom of the fifth inning after scoring three additional runs for an 8-0 decision. The Flames conclude preseason action at the Worth Fall Classic in South Bend, Ind., Oct. 15-16. UIC will tangle with Nebraska, Michigan, Western Michigan and host Notre Dame in the two-day event. |
