Chicago, Ill. -The UIC softball team built a three-run lead, then held off a late Lewis rally, stranding the tying run on third base in the seventh to pull out a 3-2 victory in the opener of the Flames Round-Robin Tournament on Saturday morning.

Rookie Elizabeth Jacoby went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the victory while sophomore Michelle Miller delivered the big blow for the Flames with a two-run triple in the fifth.

Alison Aguilar picked up the win for the Flames, tossing four shutout innings. The senior allowed just three hits while striking out one. Fellow senior Alycia Creese, who surrendered a pair of unearned runs, picked up the save, working the final three frames.

UIC broke through first on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning, plating a trio of runs off Lewis starter Mary Jaszczak.

Sophomore Brittany McIntyre (2-for-3) opened the frame with a double, then with the infiled playing in Jacoby pushed a bunt past the crashing second baseman allowing McIntyre to score all the way from second. Later in the frame, sophomore Miller would give UIC a three-run lead with a two-out, two-run triple to left-center field.

Lewis would trim the Flames' lead with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth. A throwing error by third baseman Jennifer Ruesnow allowed the first run to score, then an RBI groundout by Staci Davis plated the Flyers' second run.

The Flyers would put another runner in scoring position on another Ruesnow error in the seventh, but Creese induced a pair of Lewis groundouts to strand the tying run at third.

The Flames will be back in action this afternoon as they take on IPFW at 1:30 p.m.
