Softball Sweeps In UIC Round Robin

Chicago, Ill. - The Flames' softball team blanked Lewis (2-0) and Moraine Valley (11-0) in the UIC Round Robin on Saturday. Sophomore Sarah Clynes and junior Lauren Brennan each picked up their first preseason win in the circle for the Flames. Ten Flames' posted hits on the day and Brittany Dixon led UIC on offense, batting .833 (5 of 6) in two games. Brennan also produced at the plate with four RBI, while Clynes went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one homer. Recording a two-hit shutout, pitcher Sarah Clynes also turned up the heat at the plate against Lewis University. Scoreless after five and a half, junior Brittany Dixon led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a double to right-center. Clynes then stepped up to the plate and drilled a two-run homer over the right field wall to give the Flames the 2-0 lead. UIC held the Flyers in the top of the seventh for its first preseason victory. Dixon and Clynes each went 2-for-3 against Lewis and junior transfer Ashlee Ackerman notched one hit on the morning. In seven innings, Clynes allowed only two hits, while striking out two players for the win. The Flames continued to dominate on offense against Moraine Valley with 12 hits and ten RBI. UIC struck first with two outs in the bottom of the third inning. With the bases loaded, Brennan ripped a double to left field, sending two home for the 2-0 advantage. After Mallory Studzinski scored on an error by the catcher, junior Nikki Rogers and senior Becky Moran each sent a Flame across the plate to lead, 5-0.
UIC went on to notch six more runs in the bottom of the fifth. After holding the Cyclones in the top of the fifth, the Flames ended the game, 11-0, with the mercy rule. Dixon went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and Brennan owned a .666 batting average with four RBI and two runs scored. Brennan also picked up the win with five strikeouts in four innings. UIC hosts the Windy City Classic next weekend on Saturday, Oct. 7 at Flames Field. UIC kicks off the tournament against crosstown rival DePaul at 1:00 p.m. |
