Box Score

Chicago, Ill. - Sarah Clynes pitched another gem in the circle to help guide the UIC softball team to a 2-0 triumph over second-seeded Valparaiso in the Horizon League Softball Tournament at Loyola Softball Park on Thursday night.

UIC (24-31) will face No. 3 Wright State (30-24) on Friday, May 9 at 1 p.m. in the winner's bracket.

Clynes, who allowed just three hits, picked up her seventh shutout of the season. The junior improved her record to 15-17 overall with five strikeouts in 7.0 innings pitched.

Valparaiso (30-18) pitcher Andrea Zappia struggled in the first inning, walking two batters. UIC loaded the bases, but were unable to capitalize on the scoreboard.

Scoreless after three innings, Melissa Marinacci gave the Flames momentum with a solo shot to center field.

Stephanie Chavez doubled to left center in the top of the sixth, driving in Brooke Frydendall for a two-run lead.

Zappia falls to 19-9 in the circle for the Crusaders.
