Chicago, Ill. - The UIC softball team secured the 2005 Horizon League regular-season title on Sunday afternoon with a 3-2 win over Detroit at Flames Field, completing the series sweep.
Junior Nicole Shepard's RBI double in the bottom of the third inning snapped a 2-2 tie and proved to be the game-winner for the Flames.
UIC finishes the regular-season at 14-4 in league play and will be the top seed in next week's Horizon League Tournament at the Ashwaubenon Sports Complex in Green Bay, Wis. The Flames are 38-25 overall.
The Titans fell to 7-10 in league competition with a 16-26 overall mark.
Junior pitcher Brittany McIntyre kept the Detroit bats at bay on Sunday, allowing just a pair of unearned runs on six hits in the complete-game effort. She is now 19-12 on the year and finished 9-2 in league play with three saves and a 2.45 ERA.
Lindsay Roy was the tough-luck loser for the Titans, slipping to 2-7 on the season.
Freshman Nicole Robinson put UIC on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI double off the left field wall.
The Titans climbed into the lead in the top of the third, turning a Flames miscue in the field into a pair of unearned runs to take a 2-1 advantage.
The Flames took the lead back for good in the bottom of the frame. Senior Cameron Astiazaran doubled to start the rally and later scored on a single by senior Sara Hernandez to tie the game at 2-2. The two-bagger was Astiazaran's 26th on the year, setting a new school single-season record.
Shepard followed with an RBI double of her own to put UIC in front, 3-2.
UIC will begin defense of their Horizon League Tournament crown on Thursday when they take on eighth-seeded Youngstown State in opening-round action at 9:00 a.m.
