Softball Closes Out Sweep Of Detroit With 12-3 Victory
May 2, 2010
DETROIT - The UIC softball team capped off the week with a six-inning, 12-3 victory over Detroit on Sunday morning.
Ashley Hewett would get the Flames (21-31, 14-7 Horizon) on the board with two outs in the opening frame, taking a 3-1 pitch for a ride well over the left field wall after Stephanie Chavez walked and Shannon Kehr reached on an infield error for a 3-0 lead.
The Titans (3-34, 0-21 Horizon) would break onto the scoreboard in the third, stringing together three hits for a trio of runs to cut the Flames' lead to five for an 8-3 tally.
After coming in to pitch in the fifth, Devin Miller would sail the first pitch of the inning over right field to open up the sixth inning with her first career home run to extend the Flames' lead to six.
Inspired by Miller, Donyanavard would follow suit two batters later, jacking the first homer of her Flames' tenure over left field for a 10-3 lead.
Frydendall would bring in two more with a pair of outs with a single up the middle after the first baseman dropped what would have been out number three during Chavez's at-bat for the final runs of the contest.
With the win, the Flames move to 14-7 in league play, tying Wright State with the second-best record in the league. Cleveland State cemented the regular-season title with a pair of victories over Loyola on Saturday, thus claiming hosting duties for the 2010 Horizon League championships on May 13-15.
UIC will close out the regular season with a three-game series with Wright State next weekend.
