Flames Sweep Phoenix In Three-Game Series|

CHICAGO -The UIC softball team extended its winning streak to five games, the longest streak of the season as the team defeated Green Bay, 2-1 to sweep the Phoenix Thursday at Flames Field in Chicago, Ill.
"We knew that Green Bay would play a good game today, so we were pleased to come out on top," head softball coach Michelle Venturella said. "We found a way to get it done, and that was good to see."
Senior Ashley Hewett and junior Devin Millershared time in the circle for UIC during the contest. Hewett, the starting pitcher, threw four complete innings and had two strikeouts. Miller entered in the top of the fifth inning, where she also threw strikeouts and improved her season record to 13-11.
Junior Coryn Schmitextended her hitting streak to three games as she began the contest with a double to left field in the bottom of the first inning.
The Flames placed two runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sophomore Natalie Hernandez and Schmit logged two RBI in the frame. It was Schmit's 36th of the season as she leads the team in the category. Hernandez reached on a single up the middle to score junior Teresa Aguilar, while Schmit was called out on a fielder's choice. Sophomore Courtney Heeleyscored off the play to earn the second and final run of the inning.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Phoenix scored one run. UIC was able to hold off Green Bay through five frames as the visiting squad stranded nine runners on base.
UIC maintained its lead and defeated the Phoenix, and earned the sweep with a 2-1 victory.
UIC returns to action Saturday in a doubleheader against Youngstown State at Noon (CT) in Youngstown, Ohio.
