Softball Completes Sweep Of Green Bay With 5-2 Victory In Series Finale
April 22, 2010
CHICAGO - The UIC softball team capped off a series sweep of Green Bay with a bevy of home runs in a 5-2 victory on Thursday afternoon at Flames Field.
The Flames (14-29, 7-6 Horizon), winners of both extra inning contests in Wednesday's doubleheader against the Phoenix (19-15, 5-9 Horizon) would fall behind in the second inning when Green Bay's Kendra Woepse would drive in Alli Rivera on an infield single for a 1-0 lead.
With the bases loaded, pitcher Devin Miller would sit down Melani Niederer with a swinging strike to get out of the inning with no further damage.
With two outs in the same inning, Carly DeMarco would score on an inside the park home run after a clean bunt was overthrown by third baseman Danielle Peerenboom. DeMarco's speed got her easily around the bases for the third run of the fourth for a 3-1 lead.
Freshman Coryn Schmit would follow suit in the fifth, sailing the first pitch of the inning over right centerfield for her second long ball of the year. Back-to-back singles and a fielder's choice would tack on the Flames' final run for a 5-1 lead.
Niederer would keep Green Bay's chances alive in the seventh with an inning-opening triple, eventually scoring amidst an infield ground out. But Miller would fan her seventh batter to cap off the game for UIC's fourth win in a row.
The Flames remain in league play this weekend heading to Youngstown State for a Saturday-Sunday series, beginning with a Saturday doubleheader at 1 p.m.
