Chicago, Ill. - The UIC softball team suffered just its second loss in its last 15 games on Thursday with an 8-0 defeat at the hands of visiting Notre Dame on a blustery and cold evening at Flames Field.

Designated player Carissa Jaquish helped the Irish (35-13) avenge last week's 10-inning loss to the Flames (24-20), going 3-for-4 with her first career home run, a grand slam in the seventh inning.

Notre Dame hurlers Steffany Stenglein and Carrie Wisen combined for a three-hit shutout. Stenglein worked six innings, striking out eight, to pick up the win. She is now 15-7 on the season.

UIC freshman Chelsey Barclay was tagged for seven runs, just two earned, in 6 1/3 innings in the circle. She dropped to 6-6 with the loss.

The Irish turned a UIC throwing error into three unearned runs in the top of the third inning for an early 3-0 lead.

With runners on second and third and one out, Alycia Creese fielded a ground ball and went home with the throw as the Notre Dame runner attempted to score. Her throw sailed wide, though, and both runners eventually scored. Nicole Wicks would later add a two-out, RBI single for the third run of the inning.

The Irish broke things open in the seventh with five runs, highlighted by Jaquish's grand slam.

The Horizon League-leading Flames (7-1) will be back in action this weekend as they travel to meet Detroit in a three-game series. The two teams will meet in a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. EST on Saturday, before wrapping up the series on Sunday with a single game at 1:00 p.m. EST
