April 20, 2013
DAYTON, Ohio – The UIC softball team improved to 11-3 in the Horizon League after defeating Wright State 1-0 and 8-1 in a doubleheader outing Saturday at WSU Softball Field. Freshman Laura Swan paced the Flames with four hits and three RBI on the day.
"Our team did a nice job of finding a way to get it done in the first game," head coach Michelle Venturella said. "Our defense was solid and kept us in it until Laura [Swan] hit Jenna [Marsalli] in. I was happy to see us come out in the first couple innings of game two and put some runs on the board. We had some quality at-bats and had a few defensive plays that stopped their momentum. Overall, we had a good day."
With a lone run in the top of the seventh inning, UIC defeated Wright State 1-0 to begin the three-game series.
The Flames posted four hits on the day, while the Raiders earned just two in combination with two errors.
Swan had two hits in the contest. She doubled in the fifth frame and then hit a single to right field to score junior Jenna Marsalli and earn the sole RBI of the game in the top of the seventh inning, which would eventually secure the victory.
Senior Devin Miller pitched seven innings for UIC, where she faced 25 batters. She allowed only two hits, blanked seven batters and threw 87 pitches.
UIC outhit the Raiders 11-4 in the second game of the day. Hernandez, Swan and Fletcher each earned two hits in the contest, while Swan also collected two RBI.
Miller again started for UIC inside the circle, where she faced 25 batters, allowed four hits and struck out two batters.
The Flames collected three runs in the top of the first inning as Komp led off with a single at the shortstop, followed by a sac bunt laid down by Hernandez. Senior Coryn Schmit then singled to load the bases. With a single to right-center field Swan collected two more RBI on the day to earn a 2-0 advantage over the Raiders. Junior Jacki Fletcher then singled to center field to score Schmit and conclude the inning with a 3-0 lead.
In the top of the second frame, Hernandez doubled to center field, before senior Melissa Preish struck out swinging but due to a passed ball reached first base and moved to second on a throwing attempt to get Hernandez out at home. Hernandez earned the first run of the inning, before Preish scored of a ball hit by Schmit to right field, which was dropped.
UIC held on to the 5-0 lead, before the Raiders collected one run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Flames tacked on an additional three runs in the top of the sixth inning to extend their lead to 8-1, which resulted in the final score for UIC to improve to 11-3 in the Horizon League.
