Chicago, Ill. - Loyola swept the UIC softball team in a doubleheader at Loyola Softball Park on Saturday in Rogers Park. The Ramblers topped the Flames 4-3 in game one, followed by an 8-0 triumph in five innings to cap the day. The finale of the three-game series is set for a 1:00 p.m. start on Sunday, April 15.

Loyola 4, UIC 3

Despite leading 2-0 in the first two innings, Loyola bounced back in the bottom of the third inning with four runs. UIC scored in the top of the sixth inning, but the Ramblers held the Flames in the seventh to take game one, 4-3.

Sophomore Melissa Marinacci led UIC in game one with one run and one RBI. Marinacci went 3-for-3 with her first homer of the season. Sophomore Sarah Clynes was 1-for-3 with one run, one RBI and solo blast to start off the game in the top of the first inning. Junior Ashlee Ackerman went 2-for-4 and freshman Stephanie Chavez was 2-for-3 with one run scored.

Ashley Mitchell was 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI. Senior Raven Gengler was 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Loyola's Angie Funston (1-2) picks up the win in the circle, while Clynes moves to 9-11 on the season.

The Flames went up 2-0 on solo homer from Clynes in the first and a throwing error from center fielder Nora Schober in the second inning to send Chavez home.

The Ramblers notched four runs in the bottom of the third inning on four hits. Mitchell tabbed an RBI single up the middle, followed by a two-run RBI from Gengler and an RBI by Kristin Medrud to take the 4-2 lead.

Marinacci belted a solo shot to right field to get within one run in the sixth inning, but fell short as Loyola held UIC in the seventh.

Loyola 8, UIC 0 (5 innings)

Loyola topped UIC, 8-0, on a walk off three-run home run by Kristin Medrud in the bottom of the fifth inning.

 

 

Amy Solava picks up the win in the circle to move her overall record to 6-7, while UIC freshman Chelsea Fuemmeler falls to 2-12 on the year.

Clynes went 2-for-2 at the plate for the Flames.

Medrud was 1-for-2 with a three-run homer. Funston went 1-for-2 with one run and two RBI. Katerina Krause went 1-for-3 with a solo home run.

Loyola took a 4-0 lead on an RBI double by Gengler and a two-run RBI single from Funston.

Scoreless in the third and fourth inning, Krause gave the Ramblers a 5-0 lead on a solo shot to left field. With two on, Medrud homered to center field for the 8-0 win.

Following this weekend's three-game series, UIC travels to Wisconsin for a doubleheader against the Badgers on Tuesday, April 17.
