Flames Edged By Bulldogs, 4-3
April 6, 2012
INDIANAPOLIS – Junior catcher Teresa Aguilar threw out two runners attempting to steal Friday inside Butler Field in Indianapolis, Ind. UIC and Butler were even with hits at eight a piece, but the Bulldogs edged the Flames, 4-3.
“We had opportunities early to score, but didn’t move runners when we needed to,” head coach Michelle Venturella said. “I give a lot of credit to their pitchers, who did a nice job for them. We need to be more aggressive, and put the ball in play to challenge them. Ashley (Hewett) did a nice job in relief today. It was also good to see Melinda (Macias) and Coryn (Schmit) make solid contact today, and our defense played well. Teresa (Aguilar) did a great job of throwing out a couple of runners, which keeps runs off the board. We need to come out tomorrow and set the tone.”
The Bulldogs led off the game with a 1-0 lead. The Flames then answered in the top of the fourth inning as sophomore Jenna Marsalli hit a double to right center field, before advancing to third base on a wild pitch. Junior Coryn Schmit singled to center field, and advanced to second base on an error, and Marsalli scored, which gave Schmit her 23rd RBI of the season.
In nearly identical fashion, sophomore Natalie Hernandez singled to center field, and advanced to second base on an error to score Schmit. The final Flames run came when Hernandez advanced to third on a passed ball, before Melissa Preish reached on a fielder’s choice, while Hernandez scored.
With the score at 3-1, Flames, Butler answered in the bottom of the fourth by tying the game at 3-3. The contest remained tied until the bottom of the sixth inning when Butler took a 4-3 lead to win the contest.
The Flames return to Butler Field Saturday for a doubleheader that begins at Noon (CT) in Indianapolis, Ind.
