UIC Softball Wins Two; Miller Records No-Hitter|
April 3, 2013
CHICAGO – Hurler Devin Miller tossed a no-hitter in the nightcap, helping the UIC softball team record a pair of Horizon League wins over Green Bay, 6-1 and 9-1 Wednesday at Flames Field.
“I am extremely proud of our team today,” head UIC softball coach Michelle Venturella said. “The offense did a great job of giving our defense opportunities and room for our pitchers. Devin [Miller] was solid on the mound, and I am really proud of her performance. They are a good hitting team and I think we will see more of that tomorrow, but I think Devin kept them at bay, which was great. Our defense gave them a couple of opportunities and we have to be sure that doesn’t happen. Overall, we are very happy to get a couple of wins over a good team.”
Miller collected a no-hitter, while the Flames collected 12 hits in the contest. Junior Natalie Hernandez went 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs and one RBI. Senior Melissa Preish and junior Jacki Fletcher also had two hits on the day, while Fletcher chipped in with two RBI. Senior Coryn Schmit and sophomore Erica Hampton also recorded two RBI.
UIC opened with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Senior Kara Komp led off the frame and was hit by a pitch, before Hernandez and Preish laid down back-to-back bunts. Schmit then singled to centerfield to score Komp and Preish. Freshman Laura Swan singled up the middle for an RBI to score Preish. Hampton then hit a sacrifice fly ball to right field to score Schmit and record the final run of the inning to lead the Phoenix 4-0.
UIC then added five more runs in the second inning. Komp again led off the inning, where she singled and advanced to second base on an error by the second baseman. Hernandez doubled to score Komp, before Preish singled to move Hernandez to third. A single by junior Jenna Marsalli scored Hernandez. Marsalli and Preish then committed a double steal Swan walked to load the bases. Fletcher singled to left field to post two RBI. Hampton posted the final RBI of the inning and the game with a single to centerfield to score Swan.
The Flames handled the Phoenix in five innings with a 9-1 decision.
UIC out-hit the Phoenix nine to four in the second game of the day. Komp, Hernandez and senior Teresa Aguilar each earned two apiece. Schmit collected two RBI.
Komp led off the opening frame with a walk, before Hernandez reached on a bunt and Komp reached third base. Hernandez stole second and Komp scored on an error by the shortstop. Hernandez then moved to third, before scoring on a wild pitch to gain a 2-0 edge on Green Bay.
UIC added four more runs to the board in the bottom of the third frame to reach a hefty 6-0 lead. The Flames were able to hold on to the lead and close out the day with a 2-0 record over Green Bay.
