Softball Earns Sweep Over Horizon League Leader Butler

Chicago, Ill. - Sophomore third baseman Sara Hernandez was a combined 5-for-7 with six RBI to help propel the University of Illinois at Chicago softball team to the 7-2, 8-2 Horizon League sweep over Butler at Flames Field on Thursday evening.
With the sweep, UIC improves to 10-26 on the season and 3-2 in the Horizon League, while Butler falls to 11-16 and 2-3 in league play.
Junior righthander Alison Aguilar picked up the complete-game victory for the host Flames in the opener, scattering eight hits and striking out six batters to improve her record to 4-11 on the season. Butler starter Meghan Howard was tagged with the loss, allowing three runs and three hits in two innings of work.
Freshman righthander Brittany McIntyre earned the complete-game victory for the Flames in the nightcap as the Orland Park, Ill., native scattered seven hits and struck out four to improve her record to 5-11 on the campaign. Butler hurler Lynn Hohs took the loss for the Bulldogs, allowing nine runs and eight hits in five innings.
Butler got on the board first in the opener, as third baseman Melissa Lemrick roped a two-out, two-run double in the top of the third inning to put the Bulldogs ahead, 2-0.
Sophomore third baseman Sara Hernandez plated Cathey with a RBI single, while designated player Amanda Rivera drove in Astiazaran with a single. Freshman second baseman Meghan Gallagher capped off the inning with a two-run double to put the Flames ahead 4-2.
UIC put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fourth inning as Hernandez roped a two-run double, followed by a Rivera sacrifice fly to give UIC a 7-2 lead.
In the nightcap, UIC got on the board in the opening frame as Astiazaran and Hernandez connected for back-to-back doubles to put the Flames ahead 1-0. Rivera (walk) and first baseman Alycia Creese (single) both reached base to set the stage for a two-run single by freshman right fielder Nicole Shepard to put UIC ahead, 3-0.
Butler narrowed the gap to 3-2 as Lemrick roped a two-run, two-out bases loaded single in the top of the third inning.
UIC put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fifth inning as they tagged Hohs for five runs and four hits, highlighted by a two-run double by Hernandez and a two-run homer by Creese, her second of the season to give the Flames the 8-2 advantage.
UIC will be back in action on Saturday afternoon, as they will travel to Wisconsin for a Horizon League twinbill against UW-Green Bay at 3:00 p.m.
