April 2, 2005
Chicago, Ill. - Freshman Mercedes Lovato tossed a two-hitter as the UIC softball team completed a doubleheader sweep of visiting Youngstown State on Saturday with a 3-1 victory over the Penguins at Flames Field.
UIC, which has won three straight and 14 of its last 15 games, is now 22-16 on the year and 2-0 in Horizon League play. Youngstown State slipped to 11-15, 1-3 in league contests.
Lovato picked up her team-high 13th won of the season on Saturday, allowing just two hits and one unearned run in seven innings.
The Flames needed their rookie to be on the mark as Penguin hurler Ashley Lockmiller, who fell to 4-3 with the loss, surrendered just three runs on three hits in her time in the circle.
Senior Sara Hernandez put UIC on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run homer off the scoreboard in centerfield. It was her second home run of the season.
The Penguins answered back with a run in the top of the second without a hit. Two walks and a UIC error loaded the bases with one out and then an RBI groundout Char Kudlock cut the Flames' lead to 2-1.
The Flames and Penguins will conclude their three-game series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Flames Field.
